A company in Zimbabwe that processes cotton produced by various farmers across the country needed a way to capture bought cotton from the farmer who would bring the
cotton to the depots.
These depots are widely spread across the country and most of them did not have any form of communication with head office.
A system was introduced
to allow staff at the depots to capture bought cotton and issue payments to the farmers.
This data was then sent to head office via a satellite link using microsoft sql replication.
Technologies used included:
- asp.net 1.1
- Sql Server 2000
- Sql Server 2000 Replication over a satellite link
A company in the United Kingdom required a system that would enable them to stay in "contact" with their vending machines and get various information
about the machine on a daily basis.
The contact between the company and the vending machines would be done via sms.
The vending machine would send sms to a central processing system that would process the sms.
Another part of the vending management system was the ability for a vending machine attendee to do a stock take on the machine and upload the stock take via a mobile phone to the central processing system, eliminating the need
for someone to recapture the stock take from a paper copy.
The kind of information expected from an sms included:
- Current stock levels inside the vending machine
- Errors / Problems with vending machine like, low temperature, money box full etc
Technologies used included:
- asp.net 1.1
- Sql Server 2000
- Analyis Services
- Reporting Services
- GSM
- Mobile application developed using .net
Gencentric developed a suite of applications to help our client with managing their business. Their business includes flying small 16 or less seater planes to various lodges across Southern Africa.
This system suite is made up of the following applications:
- Reservation System
- Logistics System
- ETA System
Reservation System
The Airline Reservations System was developed as a internet application that would allow registered users to make bookings. The website is only accessible by travel agents.
Logistics System
This system would allow a user to now schedule a flight using virtual earth based on where the passengers are flying, due to teh nature of their business meaning that not every day is the same flight destination wise, we have had to develop a very customisable and robust system that woudl cater for their ever changing needs. This system can also at any time show the exact location of a plane on a map using GPS technology.
ETA System
This system is the ETA (Expected Time of Arrival) System that would allow the client to send important eta information to the destination lodges should their passengers be experiencing any delays, this app would allow a user to login to a flight number and then adjust the times and the system would then send out a notification via email or sms to the affected parties.
Technologies used in the suite include:
- .net windows and web apps
- Sql Server 2000
- Analysis Services for data mining
- Sharepoint
- Virtual Earth
- GSM

An application to track daily production for an open cast mining operation. This includes equipment utilisation, personnel competencies, explosives control, and fuel & oil usage.
The operation comprises various sites distributed across a vast area, where fixed telecommunications are non-existent. However, GPRS and 3G mobile signals are available.
The solution comprises a web-based application which allows production figures to be captured at the remote sites. Due to the bandwidth restrictions, AJAX, client-side validation, and HTTP compression is used to minimise the traffic volume.
A custom security layer was built to enable fine-grained control over user access. Users are restricted to specific sites, as well as specific activities on items within each site.
All data is persisted to a SQL Server database, while reporting is done via SQL Server Reporting Services and SharePoint 2007.
Technologies used included:
- ASP .Net (2.0)
- SQL 2005
- SSRS 2005
- AJAX
- HTTP Compression
A data warehouse that is used to track the correlation between health status, sick leave, and medical costs, as well as the effects of lifestyle counselling on medical costs.
Data is received on a monthly basis from Medical Schemes, Employers, and Health workers. This data is processed into a database and validated.
The final results of the OLAP cubes are reported via summary dashboards and detailed reports using SQL Server Reporting Services and Excel Services hosted in SharePoint 2007.
Technologies used included:
- SQL 2005
- SSIS 2005
- SSAS 2005
- SSRS 2005
- MOSS 2007
- Excel Services
Goods are dispatched from various autonomous factories, and delivered and invoiced to multiple branches for a given client. However, certain clients pay all accounts from a central buying office, thus requiring consolidated statements.
Head-office users create templates of the required statement layout for each client, which is stored in the database. Outputs can be in CSV, XML, or Microsoft Excel format.
The factories have different, non-compatible accounting systems in place. At month-end, each of the factories exports client and invoice information to flat files. A service monitors the file system for these files, and transfers them to the local FTP site.
At head-office, a service checks the FTP sites of all the factories on a pre-determined schedule. Files are downloaded, and then processed into the database.
Users can then request a statement for any client for any given time period, which is generated on the server and mailed to the user.
Technologies used included:
- Windows Application
- Windows Services
- Click-Once Deployment
- SQL 2000
- DTS
- FTP
- Excel

A company that provides the public with highly secure safety deposit boxes required a system to manage their clients boxes and access to the boxes.
Gencentric developed the client administration system which would control the enrolling of users onto the system and the users ongoing maintenance, this system was integrated into the access control system enabling the bank vault staff to allow / disallow a custome access into the vaults.
The system also featured a communication system that could enable the bank vault staff to communicate with their clients via sms, email or fax.
The system included features such as:
- Client takeon which interfaced with a fingerprint reader to get the clients fingerprints which would allow access to the vaults.
- Client takeon also interfaced with a webcam to take a photo of the client
- Replication to send clients to other branches should a client move his box from branch A to branch B, thus preventing the recapturing of the users details at the other branch.
Technologies used included:
- .net
- Sql 2005 and Sql Server Replication
- GSM
- Office integration for reports
The Events Management System was created as an addon to Sharepoint that would allow a company to centrally keep a list of contacts and using these contacts could create an event inside sharepoint, events could include (Meetings, parties etc).
Users of the EMS could add contacts (now invitees) to the event and then the system would send out emails with the invite to the event attached to the email as a PDF.
The pdf could then be opened by the invitee then completed and then the system would automatically send a RSVP back to the EMS which would then update the invitees attending status and any other special requirements.
This automation of the whole RSVP process has saved people alot of time. A reminder system was also added to allow reminders via sms or email to be sent to people who are attending reminding them of the event.
Technologies used include:
- .net
- Sql Server 2000
- Sharepoint
- Reporting Services for displaying event information inside of sharepoint
- GSM
- Office integration
Project 1
A firm of attorneys recover debt for a major bank. Information relating to debtors and payments must be kept synchronized between the two disparate systems on a daily basis.
This project required data retrieval from multiple POP3 servers, transformation of the data, then routed depending on data values and information types. The main goal was to also enable additional data sources to be added, as well as conditioning rules for information delivery, without impacting on the system as a whole and creating additional development time.
The following BizTalk features were used on the project:
- BizTalk adapters (including File, MSSQL and POP3)
- Custom pipelines (for message encoding, transforming and decoding)
- Standard pipelines
- Standard and custom functions (decision making process)
- Orchestrations (routing and new message generation)
- Shared hosting installation
Other technologies used in the project include SQL Server, Reporting Services and SharePoint.
Project 2
A major furniture manufacturer electronically collects and consolidates debtor information from its numerous factories throughout Southern Africa each month.
This project required data retrieval from multiple FTP servers (running within a WAN), validation of the data, then routing depending on information types. The main goal was to also enable additional factory data sources to be added, as well as conditioning rules for information delivery, without impacting on the system as a whole and additional development time.
The following BizTalk features were used on the project:
- BizTalk adapters (including File, MSSQL and FTP)
- Custom pipelines (for message encoding, transforming and decoding)
- Standard pipelines
- Standard and custom functions (decision making process)
- Orchestrations (routing and new message generation)
- Legacy hardware installation
Other technologies used in the Steinhoff project include SQL Server, Reporting Services and Windows SharePoint Services.
